The Man Who May Be Mexico's Next President: Enrique Peña Nieto

The latest darling of Mexico's political scene is the handsome Enrique Peña Nieto. For many people in the country, he is the best bet for the coming elections. This has led to a great deal of worrying from his competitors in the presidential race.

Despite the period for campaigning not yet officially starting, Nieto's fame among the voters has been steadily rising. One of his specialtiies is the art of public speaking, which obviously helps his cause. He possesses an intense magnetism that takes him an hour to walk through a crowd because women grab on to him and do not want to let him go.

Some of the critics are prone to saying that Nieto's repute is all due to a supposed deal he made with the most influential TV network in Mexico. They say that he paid off the media conglomerate to get it to repeatedly show news about the things he has already achieved, in a sort of TV campaign. This, they say, is why Televisa always seems to be in support of Nieto's work.

It is proposed by some that the rumors were given voice only because Nieto admitted that he was seeing someone from the network's roster of stars, Angelica Rivera. Rivera is one of the most famous actresses from the network, a major star. The man's first wife was Monica Pretelini, who had already passed away.

Pretelini was able to give Nieto three children prior to her passing. On the second year of his governorship of the state of Mexico, his wife Pretelini died due to a seizure-induced arrhythmia and respiratory arrest. The result of Pretelini's passing was a renewed interest in the handsome Nieto as people wondered who would be his next wife.

This popularity with the ladies makes up only a portion of his repute. Part of his previous gubernatorial campaign was traveling to different parts of the state, asking constituents what public works they need, and pledging to deliver these promises or commitments or what he calls “compromisos”. He placed infrastructure and public work projects as high priority items in his political agenda.

When the promised public works were constructed, Nieto's campaign managers organized huge parties and gatherings for their (and Nieto's) promotion. This is perhaps one big reason for the man's reputation as a politician who actually keeps campaign promises. Detractors do say, though, that the lavish inaugurations for his public works were even more expensive than the actual public works.

An incident at a book fair not too long ago also drew critiques for the politician. Nieto was unable to state the titles and writers of tomes that he claimed were the ones he liked best. Nieto was noted to have said that he usually forgot these details, being more interested in the tome's contents.

His mistakes unleashed humorous, sometimes harsh, remarks on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. When one of his daughters was asked about it, she delivered a rather emotional response that may not have been wise. Despite Nieto's attempt to admit to his own errors and to that of his child in her "undiplomatic" retort, the detractors have not paused in their criticism of him.

It is Enrique Peña Nieto himself who alleges that those who criticize him often do so for words that are not taken in the proper context. Most people are still predicting his win in the polls, though. His is the strongest bid due to the voting population's fondness of him.
